Dr. Alison Vaughan, BSc., MSc., PhD.

Dr. Alison Vaughan, Post Doctoral Research Fellow, BSc., MSc., PhD

Originally from the Isle of Skye in Scotland, Dr. Ali’s experiences with animals have taken her all over the world including Australia, Spain, Mongolia, and now finally Canada.

Ali holds a science degree (BSc hons) in Applied Animal Behaviour Science from the University of Lincoln in the UK. This course specialised in learning theory and problem behaviour management. The University of Lincoln is also home to the Animal Behaviour Clinic which specialises in pets and animals of all species with behaviour and training problems, including aggression, fears, toileting problems and many more.

Ali continued her studies with the world-renowned University of Edinburgh’s Applied Animal Behaviour and Welfare Master of Science (MSc) degree before coming to Canada to complete her doctorate, “Practical applications for the learning abilities of cattle”, at the University of Saskatchewan. In January 2015, Ali joined the UBC’s Animal Welfare group as a Post Doctoral Researcher. In this role she conducted research that delved into how cattle learn and what we can teach them.

Ali has been a repeat guest lecturer at both the University of Saskatchewan and the University of British Columbia, covering topics such as the use of applied animal behaviour and learning theory to improve welfare of companion and production animals.

In addition to her studies Ali has put theory into practice, training many different species as part of her research (and for fun!). From training carrion crows to use experimental apparatus in sophisticated cognition studies (Cooperative Crows Research Group) to her more recent research – toilet training cows! Whatever the species, fur or feathers, big or small, the training principles are the same and the only limits to what can be achieved is our imaginations!

Ali combines her scientific expertise and her teaching experience to create an enjoyable educational experience for you and your dog. If you are looking for a fun, knowledgeable, supportive trainer to guide you through your training then you’ve come to the right place!
